In the summer of 2000, I headed out to Seattle to climb both Mt. Shuksan and Mt. Rainier within two weeks. Considering that this was my first big alpine mountaineering attempt, I seriously underestimated what It would take. I had planned on meeting up with an online "friend" in Seattle after I climbed Mt. Shuksan, but for some reason, this person never showed up until I had to change my flight back to Minneapolis a week early. I was so angry that I didn't get to climb Mt. Rainier, but at that point, I just wanted to go home and worry about it later. As if to add insult to injury, when we took off from the Seatac Airport, we poped out of the clouds and the first thing I saw was the huge Mt. Rainier looming in the distance...

With that said, I am happy to report that from June 27th - July 4th, 2002, I will be heading to Mt. Rainier with a good friend to hopefully summit the mountain. I am in training now to climb the mountain and I will have a full trip report, and many pictures when I get back. Its less than 40 days until the trip and I'm psyched. I have all my gear ready to go and I feel really good about the trip. I just can't wait to set foot on the mountain and I hope I'm in its good graces! Wish me luck!

 Update!!! (July 10, 2002)

I summitted Mt. Rainier on Tuesday, July 2, 2002 at 8:15 AM under almost perfect weather conditions. The trip report has been posted and the pictures can be found at my gallery site. I cannot begin to tell you how amazing this trip was, and the feeling on top was incredible, beyond words. I hope you enjoy the story and the pictures!

 Update (March 4, 2003)

I was curious how many actually summitted Rainier last year, so I sent an email to the National Park Service to inquire. It turns out I was one of 11,313 people who attempted to climb Rainier in 2002. I was also one of 5,553 who summitted the 14,411' mountain (only 49.01% of those who attempted in 2002 were successful). Since records have been kept beginning in 1852, there have been 237,624 people who have attempted to climb Mount Rainier. Only 145,003 have been successful in getting to the top (61.02%). (NOTE: These stats are correct as of December 2002.) It's truly an amazing feeling to be part of such a group and to have all the memories of this trip.
